New House Series: Hallway Pt 5 - Color!
Reader,
This has been a milestone that I have been itching to reach for months now. I finally was able to get some color on the stairwell! When we last left the hallway, I was ready to start painting the hallway. I hit a snag though. I couldn't figure out a good place to stop painting. I know we talked about the bullnose corners, but they really made it frustrating. I felt like I wasn't making progress. I wanted to get to painting, but there was pressure to finish all of downstairs first so I could paint everything at once. Finally, I just decided that was silly and I needed a motivation boost in the form of finishing something! I set out to paint as much of the stairwell as I could!
The Crisp Linen looks so great! It is really amazing to see the color go on. The wall smoothing process is not clean (shocking I know). The color under the wall shows through, there is rust on the tools, and there's my filthy hand prints from moving the ladders around. All in all, having a solid color dramatically changed the look of the space.
I find it a little ironic that my final color is pretty much the same as the color the walls were before smoothing. I want a neutral color for sure, but I don't know if I love it being the same color. That being said, the white ceiling and trim does offset it. It will do for now until I start doing accent walls.
The wall smoothing is so much better, but it can be a little discouraging to work for 5 hours and have the walls pretty much look the same. Meanwhile, 20 minutes and a paint roller and it feels like I am in a new house.
If you have ever worked on something that felt like it got worse before it got better, you probably know what I am talking about. Finding motivation for getting that kind of stuff done can be tough, but I am starting to really see light at the end of the very long, very smooth plaster-covered tunnel!
My favorite part has become installing the switchplates. It is such a small amount of work, but it is a finishing touch that makes the space feel like a home instead of a construction zone. I keep getting deep into this work and fantasizing about the next 50 projects I have to take on to make it fit the picture in my head. There are so many more projects to take on - but for now, I can enjoy a beige wall and a white switchplate.
I hope you can keep motivated!
Keep making cool stuff,
Until next time,
JoshPrime
