Spiroglyphics - Pencils?
One loop around. |
Last time I worked on a spiroglyphic, I used a sharpie. The marker started to die halfway through and it became a race against the rapidly depleting ink on my cat portrait. I immediately started the bunny with the idea to do four colors.
I am continuing to make these, but this time I wanted to try colored pencils. Markers are great, but staying in the lines can be tough - especially given how incredibly narrow some of the lines are. Some of my lines in the bunny picture were narrower than the width of my sharpies.
I decided to give colored pencils a try, assuming that I could get the point of my colored pencil to be as thin or thinner than the lines.
If you are reading this, you have likely read previous entries - and are in my immediately circle. Therefore you already have your antennae up about that last paragraph. Clearly, something is going to go wrong.

What could it be? There is no way he can screw up using a pencil. That is where you are wrong, reader. I can indeed. It is simple! I don't have a pancil sharpener here. As ridiculous as that is to say, this project was nearly thwarted by not having a pencil sharpener.
Every time my pencil wore down, I had to whittle it with an edge of a pair of scissors. That led to a blister on my hand and an appreciation for the art of whittling. I even googled "cutting up wood for sculpture" because I couldn't figure out the proper spelling of "whittle." Spellcheck was no help, trying to guess that I was "waddling" my pencil. That doesn't even make sense, Chloe!
Adding pink to the negative space, because reasons. |
You might be confused. I named all electronic helpers Chloe. I am not sure why. Alexa lives in my house, yet I still call my car GPS Chloe. My phone has Siri built in, but when it changes the word "shit" to "shot" for the 4th time I still yell at Chloe.
I feel like we have drifted off the thread here. Point is, it took a lot longer to get this most recent picture done since I couldn't sharpen my pencils appropriately. My pencils were sharper than a marker, but in the end it isn't noticeably better overall. Sure, I could have waited and bought a sharpener, but then we wouldn't have this story. It would instead be a story about how I successfully colored with a coloring pencil. Less interesting, isn't it.
Keep making cool stuff!
Until next time,
