Doughnut Bath Bombs!

Hey Reader!

It's that time of week again! This week, I wanted to expand my bath bomb skills a little further and use some new ingredients - namely sprinkles. I have been using the non-lush bath bombs from my local supermarket for a while now and have noticed the decision to include sprinkles.

Are sprinkles appropriate for bathtime now? Maybe it is just something we do to allow us to eat donuts in the tub. I am totally cool with that. In the interest of tub related sugar rushes, I decided to make doughnut bath bombs! Is "donut" acceptable? My spellchecker doesn't think so. I guess to look at it without the Dunkin' context that is really "DO-nut."

I still have my doughnut molds from my FoodStirs experiment a last year. If you have forgotten, FoodStirs is an awesome box subscription service from Sarah Michelle Gellar. Go month to month, or just pick out your favorite thing and try it out. They are having a big sale this week if you use the offer code: FEVER. This isn't sponsored by them or anything, just a statement of fact that you might want to take advantage of. The recipes are all kid friendly and the ingredients are ethically sources - if you are into that kind of thing.

Regardless, I wants to use my doughnut mold for this project! I added some sprinkles to the bottom of my mold and then prepared my bath bomb recipe. I have tried a bunch of different recipes, but this one is my go to now.
1 cup of baking soda
1/2 cup of Citric Acid
1/2 a cup of salt
A sprinkling of corn starch
1 tablespoon of witchhazel added slowly to dry ingredients

For scent, I added some cookie scented oil I had from previous projects. I did encounter one issue, my purple food coloring turned my recipe gray. As you will see at the end, it dried a bright purple color so that was a relief. I am not sure why the purple food coloring did this. I have never had this issue with any other color, and I am certainly not new to dying my bath bombs.

I was really nervous they were going to come out of the mold this color. I wish I had one of those cool time lapse cameras so I could have seen how the color developed. In the end, the finished product is a vibrant purple color. It might actually be darker than I wanted. I kept adding more color because the gray was really freaking me out.

These might create pretty strong color change in the tub! I can't complain though, because they look adorable!

Also, I mixed the colors by hand this time and I found that the distribution was much better than any other mixing strategy I have used. Plus, I got to keep an eye on the texture as I was adding more liquid. Remember that you want wet sand like building a sand castle. Too much liquid and it starts reacting in your molds and then you get soup, not bath bombs.

These might be my favorite bath bombs I have made so far. They are so fun looking. You probably don't want to eat them though. Well, maybe the sprinkles if things get really dire.

Keep making cool stuff!
Until next time,
