Paw Print Soap!

Image
Hey Reader, This is the last of my bath projects for a while. I really need to get back to the walls eventually! I wanted to make some hand soaps for my powder room, and why not have them be puppy prints! You know I have been obsessed with my new scents from P&J . Every time I talk to them I imagine Peter and Janet (I don't know if that is right, but go with me) having a child named Brad and changing their name to PB and J. I have my own fun. Anyway, I did one minor bit of experimenting on this one. See, I only had a small amount of the opaque soap mix left from my orange creamsicle soap. It was definitely not enough for a whole batch of puppy print soap. However, I did have one bar of that soap left. I wondered if I could harvest it and use it again. I can't smell the orange anymore. It probably isn't an ideal situation, but it worked for this. I was again reminded to microwave your soap in 10 second increments. I definitely boiled over and it is quite diffi...

Sea Salt Exfoliating Soap

Hey reader, I am so excited to bring you content that is unrelated to house stuff yet again this week! I bought some awesome new scents that will make for some great soap. Check out my new P&J oil in Cotton Candy and Bubble Gum . They are really reasonably priced, and I have already used the soap I am writing about here and can confirm I didn't break out into horrific rashes. Woo. I am not the most sensitive person when it comes to shower and bath products. I suppose I am not the most sensitive person in any context. Though that isn't necessarily a statement of my almost pathological lack of emotions, it is more just a matter of fact. There are certainly more sensitive people than me. Point is, I like to try out a soap first and see if I react before letting others try it. However, I make a poor test subject since very little causes a reaction in me. Since this is unlikely to be the last candy scented bath product I make, you can rest assured there will be other te...

Bath Bombs with Witch Hazel!

Image
Hey reader, We only talked about bathbombs two weeks ago, but here we are making another batch. As I said before, that is largely because I forgot to write about the 3rd attempt and didn't notice until I sat down to write up this most recent attempt. My sincere apologies for such a grievous error. I am sure you have been chewing your fingernails to nubs wondering if I have figured it out. This time, you will find a horrific story. Mentally brace yourself for the horror show you are about to witness. Not since Texas Chainsaw Massacre has a recipe gone so badly. See that is funny because in that movie they make food out of people. Wow this blog must be really niche if it combines discussion of cannibalism with bath bombs. Whatever. pictured: not a WB character I have gotten much closer to success, but still I am not making the perfect Lush bombs I want to be making. Each of my attempts has been too powdery or too greasy. My newest suggestion was to try witch hazel. Am I the o...

Bath Bomb Attempt 3

Image
Hey reader! I had done this project a while ago and somehow the pictures for it never made it to my folder for blog writing. This is very sad for many reasons. Full disclosure, this is attempt number 3 and I have already done attempt number 4 at this point. Sorry, that means that you are going to get two bath bomb posts really close together. Also spoiler alert: neither attempt is very successful. That might take some of the heart pounding suspense away from my blog's normally high-stake writing style. I think we will find the power to press on though. You might recall in my last attempt , I used vegetable oil in the recipe. This led to a really oily experience that I wanted to avoid. I read some things that told me I might have more luck using avocado or coconut oil in my recipe. PS. What is up with the love affair with avocado lately. What did we do before discovering this wonder food. Our collective skin must have been so dry. Avocado seems to have worked really hard to...

Bath Bombs Are Just Toys For Adults

Image
Hey Reader, I have a bone to pick with you. Have you ever used a bath bomb? See, I am not traditionally that into face masks, facial scrubs or other such bath time products. I looked upon bath bombs with a sense of disdain that should be quite familiar to most folks from New Jersey - we have it about pretty much everything. After being convinced to finally try a bath bomb, I prepared my snarky comments and trademark New Jersey acerbic replies. Then I experienced a bath bomb first hand. It was one of the most magical experiences I have ever had. I was left with a seething rage. These things might seem like they are not reasonable to experience together. Lets start with the magic: my tub turned an amazing green color. We aren't talking a little pale green. No, my tub was straight up Ecto Cooler . I felt like I was swimming in a glass of Hi-C when I was 7. Further, the ball itself fizzed and spun around in the tub, all while making a satisfying hissing noise. It was amazing. I w...

Easter Soap!

Image
Hey readers! I am really enjoying making soap. I think it is partially because of how immediately useful it is. Making puppets is fun, but then you are left with a lot of puppets laying around your apartment like you went on a killing spree at Sesame Street. Wow. Three sentences in and I have already managed to create a word picture including murder and puppets. Damn blogging is fun - you never know where a paragraph will end up. Maybe that is more about my completely nonsensical writing style, but that is a level of introspection I am not prepared for right now. Unlike puppet making, soap making creates soap. Only the dirtiest of people will say that they don't need soap. Lots more people will say they don't need puppets. Go ahead and take a poll. I can tell you right now the results, but in the interest of science you better give replicating my study a shot. The other cool thing about making soap - at least the kind I am making that isn't 100% totally from scratch -...

My First Soap!

Image
Hey Reader! This week I am talking about a brand new thing I decided to try learning! Soap making! I am not going to be doing it totally from scratch - mostly because of the blindness issue. See, soap made from scratch uses lye, and lye can cause blindness if not used correctly. I wanted to make it totally from scratch, but when I went to Lowes, the 100% lye drain cleaner was out of stock. The fact that the product used to make soap is also used dissolve hair should give you a clue how dangerous this stuff is. I read a bunch of blogs and articles about soap making. Soap Queen has one of the best tutorials I could find on making soap from scratch and I do want to try it someday. However, I also like my eyes and flesh right where they are, not to mention there are hundreds of cool soap making tutorials and plans on Pinterest that use soap base. I did yoga the other day, and I will be honest with you - but just you and don't go telling other people. I'll be honest with you ...
