Leather Working Supplies

Ok Reader,

This post has been a long time coming. I had been saving my discussion of leather working for when I, you know, worked with leather. However, my whole life is currently consumed with wall smoothing drama. Until that is done my craft space can't be completed so my other projects are painfully put to the side.

As you know, I have a real interest in getting into binding books. I can't believe that blog post is from 2017. I can't believe I have been blogging since 2017. Granted it was November, but give me this moment.

Anyway, I received an awesome gift a little while ago of a leather working starter kit. It is so cool and contains all the tools I have seen in book binding videos all over YouTube. I have become obsessed with the work of Martina over at NerdForge. She has been making leather bound books for a while, but her new series are elemental themed tomes of fire and air.

She is doing really awesome work and I can't wait to see what is next. Check out my supplies! They are exactly the same kind of things I see Martina using in her videos. Note the wooden rounder for edges of leather. Check out the weird cotton ball things for using dye. I don't know exactly why we can't use brushes, but it is apparently a thing.

I have two pieces of leather with my kit and I plan to play around with the smaller one. It is too small to bind a book with, but is thick enough to try my hand at leather carving. The other piece is very thin so it probably won't be a good candidate for carving, but it will be a great candidate for embossing and doing the spine ridges really well. I can't wait to start making books.

This is the first post that doesn't explicitly have a craft being done in it - but it is here to show me (and you) that there will be a time when this house will be done and I can work on other passion projects! I really want to try recreating prop books from TV shows. The Charmed Book of Shadows is on my list, but lately I have also been intrigued by the Vampyr book from Buffy.

In the meantime you should keep making cook stuff - so I can live vicariously through you.

Until next time,
JoshPrime
