New House Series - Master Bedroom Pt 1 - Smooth Smooth Smooth
Hey Reader,
I am finally down to the last bedroom that needs to be smoothed. Then the bedrooms will finally be at the state that I wanted them to be when I moved in. This is the final bedroom! I have had three rooms to practice on and so this one should go off without a hitch. Ominous foreshadowing time.
The biggest issue in smoothing this room's walls is that this room is WAY bigger than all the other rooms. Not only that, it has two windows (that means a lot more edges) and an extra random corner for some reason. It seriously felt like a month of taking this room offline to get the smoothing done.
I have finally reached a place that I feel comfortable with when smoothing. I do three coats of skim coating, followed by one sanding coat. It worked great in the craft/sewing room. I know I shouldn't complain that my bedroom is large, but damn it made things more difficult. I keep hoping that when I get to the downstairs it is going to be easy because there aren't as many walls overall, but the scale of it also needs to be factored in. Fortunately, this wall smoothing purgatory is nearing its end!
I did have one self imposed challenge for this project. My bed frame is a cheap Ikea frame I have had for 5 years. When I loaded it onto the moving van to get it here, I completely ruined one side by inadvertently scraping off some of the white laminate. I don't know why I felt the word "inadvertent" was needed there. I clearly didn't ruing this bed on purpose.
I will be getting a new bed so its not a huge deal, but I was fearful of trying to take it apart again. I was worried I would wind up with a pile of beautiful Swedish kindling. As is is, the particle board at the foot of the bed where it attaches to the frame is chipping apart from being assembled, disassembled and reassembled so many times. It didn't have another flat pack in it before it was ruined.
This meant pushing the bed to the center of the room and smoothing around it. I moved the mattress to another room and slept on the floor for a while. It meant that the middle of the ceiling didn't get nearly the attention it deserved and it bothers me. It will need to be redone, but that is a problem for future JoshPrime because I couldn't stand sleeping on a mattress on the floor another night!
The next step once it was all smoothed and painted with the sealer was COLOR! But we will see that next time.
Keep making cool stuff,
Until next time,
JoshPrime
