Sewing Room 2 - Workstation

Hey reader,

It has been some time since we dealt with my sewing/crafting/making room. It has many names. I have spent a long time trying to figure out what work desk would make the most sense for me. I have found many different kinds of desks that I thought would be cool. The issue - if you can call it that - is that most of the options assume that the room has to serve a dual purpose. My space is a craft room and nothing else. I had considered trying to make my craft space also be a sitting area or have a daybed inside, but at the end of they day I already have a guest bedroom, a room with a twin (although it is a racecar) and a couch downstairs. I can't remember the last time I had more than one person sleeping here at the same time as me, so I decided to just make this room be what it is.

"Square boxes? But why though?" - Ikea
That meant I had space! I have decided that I want two work spaces. This is only going to be one of them, but eventually there will be two different desks to meet two different needs. This first one is pretty explicitly for sewing. The plan is to have something that can expand and contract, to tuck away if I am not currently sewing.

I found this great table from Ikea that was just what I wanted called the Gamleby. It is a dining table that seats 6, so it will certainly be long enough for any project I throw at it. It also has drop leaves the length of the table, so it can shrink down to a table that is a third of the size.

It has been a minute since I have been there, but they have leaned HARD into their partnership with Task Rabbit. In case you were unaware, you can hire strangers from the internet to enter your home and assemble Swedish made furniture for you. I am sure they will assemble things that aren't Swedish, but if my trip to Ikea is any indication, the folks at Task Rabbit have a curious affinity for the white press board furnishings of hipsters.

The point of Ikea furniture is that it is inexpensive and easy to assemble. They literally give you all the tools you need in the packaging. I am worried if you need to outsource this task to a rabbit. The instructions don't even have words, it is so simple that a cartoon person does it on their own. I need us to rethink our choices.

Let me put my fears regarding society's increasing apathy around trying to do anything on our own aside. Ok, storing that in the deep recesses where I keep the memory of that time I hid under my grandmother's bed and accidentally saw her coming out of the shower.

I found the Gamleby to be one of the more challenging projects from Ikea I have purchased. It isn't "let a stranger get a good look at all your valuables while doing something " level complicated, but there were 8 hinges which are always a little trickier to assemble.

The top came together really fast, though I did cheat and use my power drill to get things done more quickly. The metal strips you see on the rounded sides were already in when I got my table so it was just attaching the hinges.

The legs were very simple, but the support legs for the drop leaves took another two hinges, now with the added challenge of being at a weird angle.

I built the matching two chairs and found a cute little roll of paper that holds markers for drawing called a MÃ¥la. Also, this blog has trouble with the ring on top of an A. Also also, I checked and it is called a ring.

I now have a table that I can extend if I have a larger project. Not only that, but if the project is super huge, I can pull it away from the wall and make the table gigantic!

This is an exciting day for crafting!

Maybe this will mean I can start doing more craft projects again. Though, maybe I should just hire a JobRodent to do it for me.

Keep making cool stuff,
Until next time,
JoshPrime
