Piano Bar pt 5 - Painting Prep
Hey Reader!
I am not quite sure how to break up this piano project because I am feeling a little scattered. Anything is going to be more interesting than 11 months of wall smoothing so I guess I can do whatever I want.
I want to paint the piano to match the bench, so the first step is to sand it. Honestly, the electric sander made this an incredibly easy job. I am using a paint primer combo and doing 2 coats of the dark color and 2 coats of the light color. With all that new paint, sanding feels like an extra step - but it will make the paint adhere much better.
Getting into some of the carvings is a challenge and I sanded by hand in those areas. The electric sander definitely did a better job, but the smooth areas are also the areas that are going to be treated roughest so I guess it is better to have them done right.
It took me a few days to get the dark color on right. The picture below isn't quite the best way to protray how this went down. The top, the decorative bits at the front, and the legs are not actually attached right now. They are painted separately. Please ignore the board in the back because that is going to be the subject of it's own post.
I decided that the pin block is going to stay natural because I really grew to love the look of it.
I don't have huge amounts of time to work on this project, and so its usually dark when I am working. I have to be mindful about things like running the electric sander for fear of annoying my neighbors.
That being said, when I was doing this paint job 4 different neighbors came to visit and see what I was working on. One of them even said she had been watching the progress for weeks and finally got up the nerve to come and talk to me about it. Honestly, my relationship with people is tenuous at best, but it is so cool to know that she noticed and had enough curiosity to want to come and engage about it.
The back of the piano is pretty interesting too. I am a little bummed that it is going to be facing the wall. I'll get more into that later, but for now it is just getting the same paint as everything else.
I wish that some of my other projects lent themselves to working out in the yard as it seems like a great way to get to know my neighbors. Maybe they just wanted to visit and find out what all the noise was about!
Next, I have to get into why there is a hole in the piano. More on that next time.
Keep making cool stuff,
JoshPrime
