Piano Bar Pt 1: Step 1 - Obtain Piano
Hey Reader!
As I continue to work on smoothing walls downstairs, my mind wanders to other ways I can spend my time making and doing cool stuff. This idea actually started from not finding exactly what I wanted at a store. You know what they say: "Why pay $2 for something when you can spent $97 and make it yourself."
Essentially, I want to get a bar cart for my house. I wouldn't characterize myself as a bar-hopper, but the idea of having one for guests is cool. All the bar carts I found were nice, but seemed awkwardly sized. Most were essentially short tables you are supposed to stack alcohol on. I don't have time to bend over and pick up bottles when I want to entertain guests. What do you take me for, furniture store? Really though, next time you are at a furniture store check out how low bar carts are. I feel like they want children to drink more than adults. Irresponsible.
I did find one that was more of a cabinet, but then I wished it was just a little bigger to accommodate a mini fridge. If you are going to create a bit of furniture that big, it should be full service! I am impossible to please. Also, how much wine is a reasonable amount of wine for one person to have? This cabinet held a winery's quantity and I feel like anyone who buys it should have to go to a meeting.
I spoke with my mom about it and she spent four seconds on google and found this awesome listicle about re purposing pianos. It certainly is more of a conversation piece than a silly cabinet for alcoholics or low table for child drunks.
The quest was on to find myself a piano. Craig's list has a lot of free pianos out there. I found this gem.
It is amazing. Check out the awesome wood carvings happening on the front. Pianos are free because moving them is a huge chore. I started thinking about what it would cost to move it.
The lovely gentleman who listed it grew impatient with me and wrote back to tell me he was going to take the harp out of the piano. If you are not familiar with upright pianos, they have a giant cast iron harp inside. The part that would be hanging out behind the keys on a grand piano is instead standing upright - hence its name.
This guy was threatening me with taking the harp out. I was hardly threatened - please take it out! I am so fortunate I got connected with this guy. He removed the harp for me, which is normally a big undertaking.
A few trips back and forth and I now have parts of a piano in my garage.
I have a lot of ideas for how I want the finished product to look. I can't really dive into it just yet because I still have other things to get done - but I thought you would want to see that I am not just stagnating in wall purgatory. I have big plans for this former piano!
Keep making cool stuff!
Until next time,
