New House Series - Media Room Pt 4 - Painting fences

Hey there reader,

When we last left Media room, I had bought some segments of fence and assembled a racecar bed! Unfortunately, the fence is not quite what I had in mind for in the house. It is really rough - which is fine for a back or front yard, but not for a movie room. Fortunately, I have lots of experience in making rough things smooth.

I started with wood putty to fill in gaps, but after searching online I found that using plaster would be fine as long as the wood never was outside.

When working on the first segment, I even plastered the edges of the pickets. What I quickly discovered is that the edges were already pretty smooth - save for the detail at the top - and that adding the plaster there made sanding it a real pain. For the rest of the fence I only put plaster on edges if there was a knot or other flaw, and also on the detail work at the top. It made the whole project go much smoother. Hey that's almost a pun.

Anyway, I didn't bother smoothing the cross beams. They were already pretty smooth, plus getting in there was more trouble than it was worth. I gave the whole thing a coat of the magic primer (only on the front), and used some cheap primer on the back just to seal it and make it white. Painting fences is annoying team. There are a lot of grooves and areas to paint. Once the magic primer dried, I also painted the front a high gloss white. It took a few days but it turned out great! All that was left was to admire it in the room.

One fence segment wasn't enough, but I figured out how to make it work with only two. After measuring more times that I would like to share with you, I cut off three pickets from one of the fence segments. It was just enough to fit the rest of the wall. The remaining fence segment was just long enough to cover the other wall.

I am going to have to brainstorm how to attach the three posts to the longer segment - and how to attach it all together in general - and to make sure it doesn't tip over and ruin my car. Really I have a lot to think about still.

I am really excited by this fence idea. It is going to be beautiful, but also serve a purpose. The posts and the fence will allow me to hide a lot of wiring for the TV and all the video game systems I want to hook up in here. It will keep me from having to mess up my newly perfect walls! Plus, I have plans for lights!

Keep making cool stuff,
Until next time,
JoshPrime
