Aliens are Among Us!
Hey Reader!
I have been so busy lately, I barely had time to prepare for my murder party. Hold on, that sounds bad. Lets try that again. I barely had time to prepare my costume for the murder party. No that is worse, I am getting Purge feeling from that attempt.
There was a murder mystery dinner party that I was invited to and my character required a costume. No actual people were murdered in the creation of this party - as far as I know. I think the actual story line was part of a kit purchased online. I can't guarantee those people didn't murder anyone. I have to assume they didn't though.
This particular party was Star Wars adjacent. It certainly wasn't Star Wars. No it was not. We were cast as aliens with green skin, photosensitive eyes and antennae. The stage was set for epic costume greatness!
I started with aluminum foil to create some lightweight antennae. I have watched more than my fair share of amazing EllieMac creations and they use foil all the time. I felt confidence brewing. I had bought some liquid latex in the Halloween section and was ready to go big.
You might be realizing there are problems coming my way. Things were looking good as I glued my antennae to a headband (also shout out to me - that's the first time I have spelled the word antennae right in this blog post!).
Next came time to us liquid latex and cotton to affix them to Kirk and his recently shaved head. I had seen Ellie do similar tricks dozens of times and was super confident it would go as well for me.
In case you haven't been picking up on the thickly laid foreshadowing, this did not work. I just made a huge mess. In the videos, Ellie puts a little liquid latex on her hands and is suddenly able to touch it without sticking to every single thing in her studio. I had no such luck. I was completely covered in liquid latex and it felt like that old school hands in glue trick, except on everything and when I had a finite amount of time to create this makeup.
I had to scratch the second set of antennae (yay spellcheck, teaching me things) and troubleshoot. There were a bunch of makeup sponges available to work with and so I hastily carved some into antennae shapes. We considered using the vacuform machine, but I feared they would not be long enough.
Regardless, I am happy with what was created. Those sponges are so lightweight that they stuck on easily with latex and paper towel. The paint job was easy, though I tried to get fancy with eyeliner and some red paint to simulate photosensitive eyes. Since I had seen FaceOff for years, I knew not to neglect the fingers. I sprayed myself with hairspray and we applied a ton of setting powder. I went with a whole red tipped extremities motif. Kirk stayed closer to an all green palette, but did try his hand at red eyes as well. It wasn't until the next day we realized he was modeled after the aliens from Jeff and Some Aliens.
The party itself was a ton of fun and I really want to make my own murder party. I heard it that time. My own murder mystery dinner party. That is going to be a project for a time when things are less insanely busy though.
Making stuff is so much fun, and there are always opportunities to find time to make something cool. Try making fun stuff!
Until next time,
