Making Sprocket - Part 2

Image
Hey reader, I am just as surprised as you are that I am getting to a part 2 immediately after a part 1. I feel like I have been all over the place lately. I am starting my YouTube channel and that has cut into my craft time considerably! This puppet needs to be finished up so that I can get it to the auction though, so back at it! The next step in the process is to make the mouth plate. I have done card board mouths, poster board mouths, and plastic lid mouths. The plastic lids are the most secure and long lasting, but the creation process is much longer. I think I finally worked it down to a quicker process though. I punched four holes on either side where the elastic will go, and then sew an X into the elastic. It is much faster than my method where I force the needle through and need a pair of pliers, that's for sure. It kind of happened by accident. I have reorganized my craft supplies and couldn't find my thick elastic for mouths. I was left with a thinner elastic I ...

Making Sprocket - Part 1

Hey reader! I know that I have a puppet project in progress right now, but I was asked to donate a puppet to a silent auction to raise money and I didn't want to give away a puppet that was part of a set - so it was time to make something new! I really enjoy making puppets with fun fur, but it is so expensive. I am always looking for reasonably priced fun fur. Grizwald was made from fur remnants that were already on sale so he was pretty much a the same price as a fleece puppet - but fur can be 3 to 4 times as expensive as fleece so it is always a little nerve wracking when I take the plunge and make a fuzzy puppet. Then the other day I saw these awesome carpets for college dorm rooms that were on clearance. I guess March isn't the best time to start decorating your dorm room so they were priced to move. This pink carpet is super cool with a nice thick fur that would work great for a puppet. I was slightly concerned that it would be tough to free it from the traction rubb...

200 Pub Quizes - Cake Celebration

Image
Hey reader! I have been working as a pub quiz host for Geeks Who Drink for just over 2 years now. It has been a really fun opportunity to seem like I know trivial information that I definitely don't know! A few weeks ago I was celebrating my 200th pub quiz. I decided to revisit a project I had taken an interest in a few years ago - making cakes. Quizzers like cake! I don't really do a lot of cooking or baking normally. Cooking is an awesome project and I love trying new things, but food has always felt a little temporary. Making a bar of soap, or a puppet leaves me with a long-term tangible thing, while cooking creates a meal that (hopefully) is gone because you are an impressive amateur chef. Speaking of, there is a new show on Netflix, Nailed it , where people attempt to make awesome things with mixed results. It is definitely one of my favorite things right now. I will leave you all to decide if I nailed this one. I was hoping to cite my sources, but I was looking al...

I Might Not Know Much About It, But It Is Tasty - Cotton Candy Machine

Image
Hey Reader! You might recall that I have been very curious about cotton candy in this blog. Why? I mean, because it is fascinating. For Valentine's Day, I was shocked to come home and see that my Valentine had gotten me a full kit to get me started as a cotton candy artist! Not only did he get me 3 classic sugar flavors, he got me an assortment of hard candies to try using in the machine. Not to mention some flavored cotton candy for experimentation purposes. He also tried his hand at book binding and self-publishing with his book entitled: Cotton Candy: A Curious Confection . I am sure the audio book is coming out soon for all you busy cotton candy enthusiasts. Did you know that in South Africa it is called Ghost's Breath? Or that it's origins can be traced back to as early as 206 B.C in the Han Dynasty. You should really get a guy to self-publish your own book on cotton candy if you want to know lots of things about it. Oh yea, I went there. Lets give making ghost...

Foodstirs Out Of This World Donut Kit!

Image
Hey reader! I know I promised you cotton candy making, but this post is time sensitive! This is kind of a unique post today. I am writing about my experience making the Foodstirs Out Of This World Donut Ki t . What is Foodstirs? Foodstirs is the new box dessert delivery company owned by Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy fame. All of the ingredients in a Foodstirs box are ethically sources, non GMO, and organic. The recipes are also designed to be fun and easy to make with kids. JustLeah and I host the weekly Buffy podcast, J and L Watches , and when we saw that this product existed we thought it would be super awesome to give it a try. We are pretty much children ourselves, so this could be a great project! We were not paid or compensated in any way for this review, but if Sarah Michelle Gellar wants to send us more donuts, we are very cool with that. Anyway, even the packaging is adorable! It didn't come with quite everything we needed to make donuts. We needed to provide ...
