Dragon Puppet Pt 1 - Carving a Head

Image
Hey reader, I saw this awesome puppet by Tiny Badger and wanted to try my hand at making something similar. I was preparing to go to a convention and thought that it would make a great prop for the floor. Before I packed my bags and headed to WhedonCon to talk about running the coolest podcast , I would have to make sure my puppet was ready to go! Pictured: Definitely not a cat I have been talking about carving a foam head for a while now. Since this puppet's head was going to have a much different head shape than anything I had made before, it was time to give this a try. This is one of those things that I just dove into without a tutorial. I just found my block of foam (that I got inside my packaging materials for a 3-D printer a few years ago) and started carving. I looked a few pictures of cat and leopards for reference. I thought a cat-like dragon would be cool. Unfortunately, you would certainly not know it to look at my carving. This is apparently what I think cats...

Rainbow Puppets! Blue Pt 3 - Sewing!

Image
Hey readers! Last time we were hanging out together, I had just dyed by hands blue. Also a puppet, but mostly my hands. With hands that look like they were on a Gargamel hosted cooking show, I set out to sew together the puppet. You have seen me assemble a few heads now, and this one wasn't all that different. The triangle shaped mouth that I hoped would give the puppet a totally unique look really isn't all that noticeable. It is always interesting to me the things I spend a lot of time on that are just invisible in the finished product. It's ok, I will try again on a fleece puppet and see if that makes a difference. Learning! This head looks really odd with nothing attached to it, including its body. It doesn't have enough detail yet to look like an actual head, so its just this totally weird furry thing with a black void in the center. This angle is kind of horrifying. I am finding myself staring at it like it has some sort of pull over me. I need to move on. ...

It's a Carnival!

Image
Hey reader! This next post is a one off of a project I did for staff appreciation at my day job. We were having a carnival themed gathering where folks could play carnival games and win tickets for a raffle. The only problem of course was that we were using a regular conference room and needed to convert it into a Carnival. This meant creating carnival games! Getting to make fun things AND have it be a legitimate part of my day job is a dream come true! Some people dream of bedding famous celebrities or winning the lottery. I dream of crafting and getting paid for it, go figure. My task was a balloon dart game. You know the ones, throw a dart at a balloon, pop it and win the prize inside. Typically the balloon contains an S, M or L indicating the size of the price. 98% of the balloons have S's in them, of course. Since it seems unlikely I would be allowed to just hand people darts and have them go to town, I had to come up with a less pointy solution. I landed on this creatio...

Rainbow Puppets! Blue Pt 2 - Color is Not Quite Right

Image
Hey Reader! It has been a long time since I wrote about my plan to create a series of puppets in rainbow colors . I got distracted by a bunch of other important things craft projects! What could be more important than finishing a puppet? I know, I agree with you there, though you can pretty much get the answer to that question by reading the backlog of posts I wrote since March. Anyway, I am back at it with my blue friend who is named Blue. I will certainly never be accused of creativity. I had a plan in place to do something very different, but after seeing the success of Sprocket, and that he was out of my care after the auction, I was inspired to improve on my Sprocket design .I saw a few things I could do to make that design more clean and exciting, so I wanted to get to it before all of that fell out of my head. I used another carpet to make this puppet, these things are amazing and inexpensive furs for puppets. Generally, the pattern is exactly the same as Sprocket. The b...
